The main search and File Room instructions below concern Summit County, Ohio. Summit County in Utah and Summit County in Colorado use separate court systems. Read the state, court name and case number on the citation, arrest paperwork or report before choosing a search. The county name alone is insufficient, and these examples are not an exhaustive list of courts with similar names.

Ohio: choose felony or municipal records

The Summit County Ohio Clerk’s Criminal Division handles felony cases. Misdemeanor-only and traffic matters are primarily handled by the Akron, Barberton and Stow Municipal Courts, with some matters in Mayor’s Courts. A Common Pleas no-hit therefore cannot rule out a separate local prosecution. Start from the court identified on the paperwork rather than searching only the largest database.

Open the Clerk’s public records search through its official website and choose the criminal case route. Use a known case number or a carefully corroborated name. Save the court, number, filing year and relevant docket entries. If the case moved from a municipal court to Common Pleas, keep the earlier and later numbers together so that you can follow the complete procedural path.

Ohio: retrieve an older or unavailable file

The Clerk recommends online records for 2002 onward. For pre-2002 records it directs readers to submit a Public Records Form by email, mail or in person. Public viewing and copies are available through the File Room in the basement of 205 S. High Street, Akron, OH 44308. Problems submitting requests can be addressed at 330-643-8082.

Specify the defendant, approximate filing year, case number if known, and the exact order or date range needed. Ask whether the document exists in a paper or other retained file when no image is visible. Give a return contact and your preferred delivery method. The reviewed page does not promise a fixed turnaround for a staff-assisted older-file request.

Ohio: ordinary copies, certification and authentication

Published charges are $0.10 per page for ordinary copies or computer docket printouts, $1 per page for certified copies, and $5 for authentication, also called exemplification or triple seal. A special report requiring IT assistance is $25 per 15-minute increment. Ask for an estimate if the request involves research or a specially produced report rather than a few existing pages.

Confirm the requested format with the recipient before ordering. A six-page certified order is $6 at the published certified-copy rate, before any separately applicable service or delivery charge. Authentication is a separate product. If the recipient needs an Ohio or FBI fingerprint background check, the Criminal Division separately lists BCI at $32, FBI at $34, and a combined BCI/FBI check at $60; confirm appointment and eligibility instructions.

Ohio: interpret and correct the result

Find the final judgment or dismissal for each relevant charge rather than treating an arrest, indictment or scheduled hearing as the outcome. The Criminal Division reports dispositions to BCI, but an online docket is still a local court record. Obtain the actual certified order when formal proof is required, and use the case number to resolve any mismatch in a separate screening report.

Access can be restricted by law, rule or a specific court order. The Clerk identifies protected personal and victim information among material it may withhold. If a field or index entry looks wrong, give staff the case number and supporting order and ask about correction; do not assume that removing an online result or sealing a record happens automatically.

Utah: Justice Court is a narrower branch

Summit County Utah Justice Court handles Class B and C misdemeanors. Its MyCase route is for a person’s own cases, showing case history, scheduled appearances, balances and available public documents. It is not the Ohio Clerk’s criminal index and should not be treated as a public name search across all Utah courts.

If the paperwork names another court, such as a district court for a more serious charge, request that court’s record instead; Ohio copy charges do not apply.

Colorado: use the Judicial Branch request route

For a Colorado case, open the Colorado Judicial Branch Summit County page and its electronic Record/Document request or PDF request form. The page specifically tells requesters not to send money until asked; staff contact the requester after processing the request. State the case and document precisely, and ask for the needed certification, delivery and price rather than importing Ohio or Utah procedures.

Whichever branch fits, retain the response date and the custodian’s explanation of any missing or restricted material. An empty search is a finding about that search, not a complete criminal-history clearance. The final record should identify the right person, state, court and outcome before it is used for an important decision.
